S. Jersey police chief loses job over prescription fraud

Posted: October 06, 2012

The Police Chief in Buena Borough, Atlantic County, has given up his job after pleading guilty yesterday to obtaining a prescription by fraud.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said the now former chief, David Sherma, 37, of Landisville, pleaded guilty to the fourth-degree offense dating back to March.

At the time, a Vineland pharmacy contacted the local police department about a suspicious prescription they received from Sherma.

The Vineland Police Department and the prosecutor's office launched an investigation and determined the prescription, which they did not name, was indeed fraudulent.

Sherma is also now barred from from holding any public office or state job. He was released on his own recognizance.

Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury will sentence Sherma on November 2.
