Sat. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: La Salle, Rustin tie

La Salle and visiting West Chester Rustin exchanged second-half goals on Saturday afternoon en route to a 1-1 double-overtime tie in a nonleague matchup of two of the area's top boys' soccer teams.

West Chester Rustin is ranked No. 6 in Southeastern Pa. by The Inquirer and La Salle entered as No. 4.

Andrew Schieve gave the Explorers a 1-0 lead with a head ball of Matt Lucas' wide cross 20 minutes into the second half. Rustin struck back 5 minutes later with a goal from a wide-open Jamison MacMain.

Billy Lockfeld turned away nine shots for Rustin and Nick Higgins recorded six for La Salle.

In other nonleague action, Tyler Denlinger scored in the 73d minute to give Christopher Dock a 1-0 win over visiting Upper Perkiomen. He was assisted by Logan Hunsberger.

Archbishop Wood scored a pair of late goals to rally past North Penn, 2-1.

Dan Trodden tied it for the Vikings after a ball came out of the box to the 18-yard line. Matt Brown put away the game-winner off a cross from Steve Smith in the 78th minute.

C.J. Serratore had eight saves for the Vikings and Dave Selverian and Chris Hanson combined for seven for North Penn.

Aaron Kariuki headed in a cross from Ben Golder midway through the second half and Sun Valley held on to edge Garnet Valley, 3-2. Matt Cioeta chipped in with two goals and Matt Skwirut recorded nine saves.

Five goal scorers helped Great Valley to a 5-0 win over visiting Phoenixville. Luiz Benitez Palermo headed in a pass from Tyler Wellener to highlight the scoring.

Hector Palos needed just three saves to record the shutout.

Field Hockey

Katie Keyser scored twice and Molly Savage added two more to lift Garnet Valley past visiting Methacton, 5-2.

Keyser, a junior forward, scored twice in the first half and also added an assist. Also a junior forward, Savage scored her goals in the second half. Haley Valerio posted the win with nine saves.

Catholic Academies. Julia Mustin scored twice in a span of a minute to lift Mount St. Joseph over host Merion Mercy, 2-0.

Mustin, a senior forward, scored her first out of a scrum in front of the cage, and her second came off a rebound from the goalie's pad.

Amelia Iacobucci and Katie Mooney scored twice each and Villa Maria raced past visiting Villa Joseph Marie, 10-0.

Erica Miller and Emily Wilson combined for the two-save shutout.

Girls' Tennis

Behind a dominating performance, top-seeded Genevieve Hobson of New Hope-Solebury rolled to the District 1 AA singles title at East Falls' Legacy Tennis Center.

Hobson advances to the state tournament in Hershey and is the first Lions player to ever qualify.

Hobson downed Nazareth's Alex Vo in the final, 6-1, 6-3. In her two previous matches, Hobson had yielded only a combined four games. She hasn't lost a set all season.

She downed Becca Graber of Octorara, 6-1, 6-1, in the opening round and in the next round dispatched Delco Christian's Hannah Schmucker, 6-2, 6-0.

Christina Kaiser of Plymouth Whitemarsh and Harriton's Hannah Drayton advanced to the final of the AAA tournament. Kaiser is the top seed and Drayton the second seed.

Kaiser topped Zaina Zaki of Unionville, 7-6, 7-5, and Drayton downed Mihaela Codreanu of Methacton, 6-2, 6-3.
