Concussed Griffin 'looks good'

Posted: October 10, 2012

Robert Griffin III felt good enough to attend something called a Rookie Success Program meeting Monday morning and seemed, by all accounts, to be doing just fine on the day after suffering his first NFL concussion.

Griffin still has to complete the league's mandated return-to-play protocol before he's cleared for practice, but his Redskins teammates and coach Mike Shanahan were optimistic that he will be able to play in Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

"We should find out in the next few days exactly what happens," Shanahan said. "Right now it looks good. I'm not really sure if it stays that way."

Griffin was injured while scrambling near the sideline on a third-and-goal play against the Atlanta Falcons.

Bears fan killed in Jacksonville

A Chicago Bears fan who traveled from Lake County, Ill., to see the team play in Jacksonville, Fla., died at the hands of an "enraged" husband who saw his wife talking to the other man at a restaurant the night before the game, police said.

As the men sat on a bench near the entrance of an Irish-themed restaurant and bar, eyewitnesses saw Matthew Hinson, 27, stand up, draw a "little pocket knife" and slice the throat of 42-year-old William Christopher Pettry of Lake Villa, Ill., said Lt. Rob Schoonover of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Ex-Lions great Karras gravely ill

Friends of Alex Karras say the former Lions great suffered kidney failure in the last two weeks and has been given only a few days to live.

Tom McInerney, a friend of Karras' since the 1950s, said Karras' wife, Susan Clark, told him of her husband's failing health in a phone call Monday.

The 77-year-old Karras has suffered from a variety of health problems in recent years, including dementia and cancer. He was an accomplished actor and announcer during the early years of Monday Night Football.

Patriots' Welker: 'It was a joke'

Wes Welker told reporters he was only joking when he said after Sunday's game that he enjoyed catching 13 passes against the Denver Broncos to "stick it" in coach Bill Belichick's face.

Welker made a rare Monday appearance in the locker room during media availability to straighten things out.

"It was a joke," Welker said. "I don't know what else to say about it."

Welker said that he has a good relationship with Belichick.
