Report: Penn St. eyes quarterback

Posted: October 13, 2012

Penn State has made an offer to junior college quarterback Jake Waters, several recruiting sites have reported.

The reports say Penn State quarterbacks coach Charlie Fisher was in Iowa on Tuesday scouting Waters at practice. Waters plays for Western Community College, the nation's top-ranked junior college.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound quarterback has passed for 1,696 yards and 22 touchdowns in six games this season and boasts a 73.7 percent completion rate.

Adding Waters would provide much-needed depth at quarterback for the Nittany Lions. Penn State has only one scholarship quarterback - freshman Steven Bench - returning next year.

Five-star quarterback prospect Christian Hackenberg, of Fork Union (Va.) Academy, is committed to Penn State. National signing day is on Feb. 6, 2013.

Men's ice hockey. Penn State lost to American International, 3-2, in its first-ever Division I game on Friday night at Greenberg Pavillion. Jon Puskar scored an unassisted goal with 21 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Yellow Jackets (1-0) the win.

The Nittany Lions (0-1) pressured American International with a steady attack. Through two periods, Penn State owned a 42-20 advantage in shots.

Men's soccer. La Salle (8-2-2, 2-0 Atlantic Ten) blanked host George Washington, 4-0, behind Jason Plumhoff's goal and assist.

Massachusetts (4-5-2, 1-1 A-10) scored twice in the first half to defeat visiting St. Joseph's (4-8, 0-3), 2-0.

Women's soccer. Rhode Island's Ellie Bales scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, to defeat Temple in Ambler, 2-1. The Owls (4-9-2) got a goal from Erin Lafferty (Upper Dublin High), the first of her career, to tie the Rams (8-6-1) at 1 just seconds before halftime.
