Sat. Pa. football roundup: Haverford School ekes out win

Posted: October 14, 2012

It was a stalwart defense and a missed extra point that provided the difference for Haverford School on Saturday afternoon.

The Fords did all their scoring in the first half en route to edging visiting Springside Chestnut Hill, 10-9, in an Inter-Ac League game.

Senior Hannibal Mathis set the tone for Haverford School with his first-quarter interception. A 6-0, 185-pound defensive back, Mathis added seven tackles and kept Blue Devils top wideout Bobby Keyes without a touchdown.

Chris Morgan added a fumble recovery and Matt Galambos had a strong game at linebacker.

After Michael Hayes rumbled for a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter, Springside Chestnut Hill just missed the would-be extra point.

In the second quarter, Philip Poquie returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. The sophomore sprinted up the middle before making his way toward the left sideline.

Archbishop Ryan won its first league game since 2007 as the Raiders knocked off rival Father Judge, 32-31, in overtime at Northeast.

After Ryan tied the score in overtime on a quarterback sneak by Mark Ostaszewski, Raiders coach Frank McArdle decided to go for two.

"Just wanted to win the game," he said.

His gamble paid off as senior running back Jeremiah Agrio broke through the middle for the game-winning conversion. Agrio finished with a team-high 220 rushing yards.

Brett Rose nailed a 22-yard field goal in overtime as host Kennett withstood Great Valley's late rally to win, 17-14.

After leading 14-0 at halftime, Kennett allowed Great Valley to score a pair of touchdowns to tie the game. Cyree Ames ripped off a 39-yard run in the third quarter before he recovered a fumble in the end zone in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

In the first quarter, Jordan Lardani put Kennett on the board with an 8-yard rushing touchdown. Like Ames, Lardani also recovered a fumble in the end zone as he scored his second touchdown late in the first half.

The Overbrook and Bartram game was stopped in the third quarter after a fight broke out. Overbrook was leading 22-0 at the time and Bartram athletic director James Brown said it hadn't been determined if the game would be resumed. He declined to say whether the fight was in the crowd or on the field.

Mastery Charter 16, Dobbins 14 - Jermaine Norris recovered a fumble for a touchdown and hauled in another touchdown as Mastery edged Dobbins at Germantown.

In the first quarter, he scooped up a loose ball caused by Quinlin Lambert's hard hit on the Dobbins rusher. In the fourth, he brought in a 23-yard pass from James Johnson for the touchdown.

Nonleague

John Garrett rushed for three touchdowns as Perkiomen School rolled over visiting Academy of New Church, 48-32.

In the first quarter, he rushed for a goal-line score before adding a 73-yard sprint in the second quarter. In the third, Garrett capped his afternoon with a 6-yard run. John Williams chipped in with two touchdowns, including a 63-yard fumble recovery in the second quarter.

Bonner-Prendergast 42, Conwell-Egan 7 - Joe DePhillipo rushed for five touchdowns and 120 yards as the Friars cruised to the easy win at Truman. Bonner scored 28 points in the first quarter, kick-started by DePhillipo's two five-yard touchdowns.
