A Chester County man who admitted he got so frustrated with his colicky newborn Saturday night that he intentionally burned her with scalding water has been charged with aggravated assault and related offenses.

Jorge Colon, 20, of Oxford, was bathing his 1-month-old daughter Kiara in the kitchen sink about 10 p.m. when she began crying, according to District Attorney Thomas P. Hogan's office.

Colon told police that he became frustrated and turned the water to its hottest, removing Kiara after she began screaming, Hogan said. Colon put her in a towel, but Colon and the baby's mother rushed the baby to Jennersville Regional Hospital after her skin began peeling off, Hogan said.

The baby suffered burns over 40 percent of her body; she remains in critical condition at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where she was transferred.

Colon is being held in Chester County Prison in lieu of $125,000 cash bail.

"This is a shocking crime," Hogan said. "A father should be willing to lay down his life for his child. Instead, this defendant decided to douse his baby daughter with scalding water, causing severe burns."
