THE MORAL of the John Davis Story is . . . play your recruits in what amounts to a box-and-one.

Davis, a 6-4 1/2, 200-pound senior forward at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High, has committed to play his college basketball at Towson.

"One thing about Towson was, they came after me really hard," Davis said. "Their coaches were on me the most. I really bonded with them. During the live period, they came to every one of my AAU games and they've always stayed in contact. Even checked up on my grades to make sure I was doing my work.

"Coach Luke [Murray, an assistant], it was like he wouldn't take no for an answer. He did everything in his legal power to get me to go to Towson."

Davis made his official visit this past weekend. No other treks were scheduled, but Davis, a versatile lefty, had been hearing steadily from Delaware, Robert Morris, Boston U., La Salle, Fordham and Florida Atlantic.

"I might have been able to hold out for a higher-level school [basketball-wise], but I see Towson as my best fit. The program's on the way up and I'll be able to grow and progress as a player."

Davis said he plans to major in business or sports management.
