The Arians-Bowles link

BRUCE ARIANS was the head football coach at Temple from 1983-88 and had 10 players drafted by NFL teams, including first-rounders John Rienstra (Steelers, 1986) and Paul Palmer (Chiefs, 1987).

One of his most productive players, Todd Bowles, went undrafted but managed to latch on with the Redskins and spend eight seasons in the NFL as a defensive back. Bowles was a starting cornerback on the 'Skins' 1987 Super Bowl team.

Bowles missed the first three games of his senior season with a broken wrist, but his enthusiasm never waned.

"He became our biggest cheerleader, and it was like having another assistant around," Arians said back then. "Heck, we even let him go out for the coin toss when he was injured, and he didn't lose any."

On Tuesday, Bowles was named the Eagles' defensive coordinator.
