Math, Civics and Sciences' Worthem picks Robert Morris

JEREMIAH "Lump" Worthem entered the it's-heating-up part of the basketball recruiting process expecting to make all five of the permissible official visits. Instead, he cut things short after two and, in retrospect, could have done so after one.

Robert Morris it is for the 6-6, 205-pound Worthem, a senior small forward from Math, Civics and Sciences Charter.

"I felt Robert Morris in my heart during the visit, which was three weekends ago for their football Homecoming," Worthem said. "I did visit Stony Brook that next weekend [to compare things], but my thoughts kept coming back to Robert Morris.

"I loved the coaching staff and the players and the campus. The whole environment just fits my personality, and I like their style of play. All along, Robert Morris recruited me the right way. They kept it real from Day 1."

The bouncy Worthem, who's effective on the move, but can also hit jumpers, averaged 14.9 points last season for the Mighty Elephants, who advanced to the overall Public League quarterfinals and the Class A state semifinals.

Scholarship offers came from 18 schools, and his working list, over time, was whittled down to seven and then to four, including Wagner and Long Island. His official visit to Wagner was canceled.

Robert Morris' roster includes Velton Jones (North Catholic), Lijah Thompson (Communications Tech) and David Appolon (Imhotep Charter).

"They're all nice guys, and they helped me," Worthem said. "Velton was straight-up with me. He said there'll be some days I won't like the coach [Andrew Toole, former Penn player/assistant], but that he'll always have my best interests at heart."
