East beats West in Downingtown

Posted: October 20, 2012

For the second year in a row, the Kyle Lauletta-to-Jay Harris connection figured prominently in the outcome of the Battle of the Brandywine.

With the dynamic pass-catch duo hooking up nine times, including on two first-half touchdowns, Downingtown East notched a 35-21 victory Friday night over Downingtown West in a lightning-delayed contest before an overflow crowd at Kottmeyer Stadium.

The Cougars, ranked No. 2 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Ches-Mont League National Conference; the Whippets slipped to 6-2 and 3-1.

Last season, Lauletta fired four TD passes to Harris as East, with 21 second-quarter points, rolled to a 44-14 victory over West.

This time, with the Cougars registering their third straight victory in the rivalry, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Lauletta hit on 15 of 20 passes for 284 yards and two TDs. He found Harris for scores of 66 and 4 yards.

For the year, the Richmond-bound Lauletta has completed 131 of 192 passes for 2,032 yards and 25 TDs.

Friday, the 6-foot, 185-pound Harris, a wideout ticketed to Michigan State, turned nine receptions into 147 yards. He also carried the ball four times for 15 yards and returned a third-quarter punt 38 yards.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, after a 38-minute break in the action, junior tailback Ryley Angeline (30 carries for 143 yards) scored from the 5.

East had jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first four minutes. After Harris ran for a 17-yard TD, he hauled in a Lauletta pass at the West 48, made his way to the right sideline, and outraced several defenders to the end zone.

The Whippets, who were hurt by four turnovers, responded with two scores of their own. QB Nick Pagel found pay dirt on an 11-yard run, and halfback Mitch Meleski, on a right-side toss, went in from the 4.

In the second quarter, Lauletta's 1-yard keeper capped an eight-play, 68-yard drive and put East in front, 21-14. Just nine seconds before the break, his pass to a wide-open Harris in the left corner doubled the advantage.

The Cougars, who finished with 169 yards rushing, took a 5-4 lead in the series.

They were led on defense by tackle Josh Ganzelli, linebackers Wade Mastrog and Sage Stevenson-Panchisin, and cornerback Brandon Feamster.
