Long, Township halt C.H. East

Posted: October 21, 2012

Matt Long caught a pass in each end zone in the final 40 seconds of the first half.

The first was an interception that marked Washington Township's second goal-line stand of the second quarter.

The second was a 42-yard touchdown pass from Tom Hildebrand with just 0:08 on the clock that sparked Washington Township to a 40-13 victory over Cherry Hill East in a West Jersey Football League American Division game Saturday afternoon.

"That gave us the momentum," said Long, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound senior wide receiver and linebacker. "We carried it into the second half."

The startling sequence late in the half turned the game in Washington Township's favor, and the Minutemen rode the wave to their fifth consecutive victory.

Hildebrand, a senior quarterback, was 19-for-28 passing for 228 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a touchdown for Washington Township, which improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the WJFL American.

Long caught five passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Blaise Basile ran 12 times for 102 yards and two TDs for the Minutemen, who played perhaps their best game of the season before a large homecoming-day crowd at Tom Brown Field.

"I thought they [the Cougars] were going to be one of the toughest teams we've played all year," Washington Township coach Mark Wechter said. "But we were really clicking on offense in the second half."

Senior Daishi Goto carried the ball 31 times for 221 yards and two touchdowns for Cherry Hill East (3-4, 1-3), which had won three in a row.

"I'd give all those yards back for a 'W,' " Goto said.

Cherry Hill East snapped the ball inside the Washington Township 10-yard line seven times on two drives late in the first half.

But the Minutemen defense rose up to make two stands, with linebacker Tyler Ostrowski leading the way.

"When you make stands like that, it gives the whole team a boost," Ostrowski said.

Long's interception kept the score tied, 6-6, and gave the Minutemen the ball at their own 20 with 40 seconds remaining in the half. Hildebrand moved the home team into Cougars territory with a 38-yard strike to John Williams (7 catches, 70 yards).

On fourth and 10, Hildebrand scrambled away from pass rushers and fired to Long, who had drifted behind the Cherry Hill East defense.

"When your quarterback scrambles, you have to keep moving," Long said.

The Minutemen dominated the third quarter, as Hildebrand fired touchdown passes to Long and Williams and Basile broke loose for a 19-yard scoring run.

"We're playing with so much confidence," Long said.
