A South Philadelphia man was arrested Sunday and accused of crawling through the convent window at St. Gabriel Parish at 29th and Dickinson Streets on two nights last week and stealing about $1,250 in cash.
William Hagans, 26, was charged with burglary, theft, and receiving stolen property. Capt. Larry Nodiff of the South Detective Division said a private surveillance camera picked up images of Hagans in the neighborhood at the time of the break-ins.
Police said that about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, Hagans climbed through a front office window at the convent and took $250 from the purse of a nun. Police said he returned the next day at 3:30 a.m. and forced open another window, this time stealing two envelopes with more than $1,000 - including cash to buy Christmas gifts for children and residents in the neighborhood.
