The Phillies had acquired Herndon from the Los Angeles Angels in the 2009 Rule 5 draft, and he appeared in 97 games over three seasons, going 2-8 with one save and a 3.85 earned run average. His best season was 2011 when he posted a 3.32 ERA in 45 games.
Interestingly, the Blue Jays designated righthander Tyson Brummett for assignment to make room on their 40-man roster for Herndon. Toronto claimed Brummett off waivers from the Phillies on Thursday.
The Phillies also removed utility man Michael Martinez from their 40-man roster and placed him on their triple-A roster. Martinez, a Rule 5 pick from Washington in 2010, has hit .188 with a .241 on-base percentage and a .512 OPS in 133 games over the last two seasons.
Coaches sign on. The Phillies coaches have all agreed to contracts for the 2013 season. The only question had been whether Juan Samuel would agree to return as the first-base and baserunning coach.
Jordan leaves Phillies. Former Phillies infielder Kevin Jordan will not return as a minor-league coach in 2013, the team announced Tuesday. He had been a coach in the minor-league system since 2007, spending the last two seasons with the Phillies' Gulf Coast League team.
