Unbeaten Eastern tops Camden Catholic

Despite scoring four first-half goals and receiving a hat trick from Austyn Cuneo, Eastern showed little excitement on the sidelines in its 6-3 victory Tuesday at Camden Catholic in a nonleague field hockey game.

Eastern, the nation's top-ranked team according to topofthenet.com, improved to 19-0 this season but allowed more than one goal for the first time in 16 games against South Jersey opponents.

"Catholic played a good, hard game," Eastern coach Danyle Heilig said. "It showed my team that, when they want to play, they can do great things. But I surely don't think we put 60 minutes together.

"There was no effort at all."

Camden Catholic, which lost to Eastern, 9-1, last season, was happy with its performance.

"We played great," Camden Catholic coach Maureen Nelson said. "I was impressed. We did have our moments of personal defeat, but we definitely were able to recover, able to make an impact."

"I thought we executed everything well," Camden Catholic's Tara Vittese added. "Everyone worked their butt off."

Carly Celkos put the Vikings ahead 30 seconds into the game with a blast from the top of the circle.

However, it took Eastern, which had scored 30 goals in its previous three games, more than 18 minutes to increase its lead.

"We're a high-skilled team, and we can turn it on and dominate games just with our skill," Heilig said. "I'm not quite sure we played a team game today. I don't think our passing was really there, I don't think our movement of the ball was really there like it has been in other games."

Cuneo scored after a corner opportunity to double the Vikings' lead, then ran the length of the field to score again 1 minute, 23 seconds later.

Jade Dixon scored in a scrum in front of the cage with a minute left in the half to give Eastern a four-goal lead.

In the second half, Camden Catholic fought its way back.

After a corner insert, Vittese avoided a defender and put the Irish on the board with her 37th goal of the season.

With 12 minutes left, Alyssa Olenik scored on another corner opportunity to cut Eastern's lead to 4-2.

"You got to give it to Camden Catholic," Cuneo said. "They came out here with a lot of effort. They really wanted this game."

"We never gave up," Vittese said. "We just kept moving forward, self-starting quick, helping us get corners which led to our goals."

After Vittese was stopped on a clean shot after a corner kick, Celkos scored her second goal of the game on a corner opportunity and opened a 5-2 lead.

Camden Catholic's Kelli then responded by scoring on a corner.

"We wanted to capitalize on our corner execution," Casserly said. "The players should be proud of their corner execution today, because that has been something we need to improve on.

"The fact that we scored three of our goals on corners was awesome."

With a minute to go, Cuneo capped the scoring and finished her hat trick with a goal off a corner opportunity.
