Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse's Healthy Halloween is presented by Independence Blue Cross on Saturday morning.

From 10 a.m. to noon, kids can fill up their bags with healthy treats. Local organizations will offer entertainment such as Playworks; Zoomdance, an adventure storytelling dance class; the Clay Studio's Claymobile, with educational activities; and Fleischer Art Museum's art activities at the on-the-go ColorWheels van. Mr. Halloweenster, the Halloween hero, will be in attendance. Also featured will be face painting, balloon artists, scary storytime, and more. Guests can play on Smith's 61/2-acre playground and the Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide. The event is designed for ages 10 and younger and their caregivers.


Healthy Halloween, 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse, 33d Avenue and Oxford Street in East Fairmount Park, just above Kelly Drive. Playground is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sundays. Playhouse hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. Closed Mondays. Full Moon Night Hike

On Saturday, take a Full Moon Night Hike during Riverbend Environmental Education Center's family fun night from 6 to 8 p.m.

Hike the center's trail and learn about the moon from a center naturalist. Navigation will be by natural light from the almost-full moon. The hike will end at the top of Riverbend Hill, where there will be a campfire and marshmallow roasting.

Halloween Express at the railroad

Board the friendly Halloween Express steam train on Sunday afternoon at the Wilmington & Western Railroad. Kids in costumes will get half off the fare. The 1½-hour round-trip antique steam locomotive ride, hosted by friendly witches, will take families from Red Clay Valley to the Mount Cuba Picnic Grove. There will be a half-hour layover for a picnic or for admiring the foliage. Departure times are 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m.
