Thurs. Pa. girls' roundup: C.B. West upends Conestoga

Sophie McKnight's penalty kick tucked neatly into the right corner, and 21st-seeded Central Bucks West knocked off host No. 5 Conestoga, 2-1, in a penalty shootout in the second round of the District 1 Class AAA soccer playoffs.

The sophomore also scored in the first half as the team's entered halftime tied at 1. In the shootout, the 21st-seeded Bucks missed their first shot before converting the last three.

Erin McQuate converted penalty-shot No. 4, and Gwen Harvey kept the game alive one shot later. Grace Bendon sealed the win with three penalty-shot saves.

Downingtown West 1, Spring-Ford 0 - Jen Wittick headed in a goal early in the second half, and sixth-seeded Downingtown West held on to blank visiting No. 11 Spring-Ford. Annie Messner posted the six-save shutout.

Pennridge 4, Council Rock South 1 - Madison Iverson scored off a corner from Megan Shenk as No. 4 Pennridge scored twice in each half to ease past 20th-seeded C.R. South. Shenk scored twice and added a pair of assists.

Strath Haven 1, Unionville 0 - Ami Iannello's goal with 30 minutes left proved to the game winner as top-seeded Strath Haven downed visiting 16th-seeded Unionville. Iannello, a sophomore forward, finished off a cross from Morgan Glassford. Krissy Welsh needed just one save to post the shutout.

Pennsbury 2, Boyertown 1 - Megan Engeland's second-half goal sealed 10th-seeded Pennsbury's win at No. 7 Boyertown. Lexi Brown scored in the first half and Sarah McDonald turned away seven shots.

Field Hockey

Juli Cardamone broke through for an overtime game-winning goal, and Springfield (Montco) edged visiting Merion Mercy, 2-1, in the quarterfinals of the District 1 Class AA playoffs. Cardamone also had a second-half goal.

Villa Maria 6, Christopher Dock 0 - Amelia Iacobucci and Megan Parsons scored twice each as Villa Maria blanked visiting Christopher Dock. Megan Murphy chipped in with two assists.

Public. Liz Miller scored twice and Kaitlin Sommer posted a pair of saves to lift Washington over Central, 5-0, in the league semifinals.

In the other semifinal, Emily Davi scored with eight minutes left in overtime as Franklin Towne Charter captured a 2-1 win over Northeast in the league semifinals.

Inter-Ac. Moira Putsch scored four times to lead Notre Dame past Baldwin, 9-0, and clinch a share of the league title. The junior also added three assists.

Cross-Country

Cardinal O'Hara's Grace Mancini cruised to a first-place finish to capture the District 12 Class AAA title. She navigated the course in 18 minutes, 48 seconds, and the Lions won the team title. Archbishop Wood's Erin Young (20:15) won the AA title and Masterman's Carina Falherty (21:55) won the A title.

Tennis

Sophomore Julianne Herman of Archbishop Ryan defeated Washington's Selena Ocasio, 6-0, 6-0, at Legacy Tennis Center to win the District 12 Class AAA title. Central's Lily Goldberg and Natalie Fox teamed to win the doubles title.

Nicole Bartle of Lansdale Catholic won the AA singles title, and Masterman's Nadijah Campbell and Emma Lipshuts won the doubles crown.
