Posted: October 26, 2012

A first-round playoff field hockey game came down to the final minute, as host Lenape defeated Toms River East, 1-0, Thursday in the Central Jersey Group 4 bracket.

Lenape's Alyssa Spear scored with less than a minute left in regulation.

Amanda Cohen stood strong in goal for the Indians, making three saves to earn the shutout. Lenape advances to play Tuesday at Freehold.

In other Central Jersey Group 4 action, senior Taylor Janney scored eight minutes into the second half to give Cherry Hill East a 2-1 victory over visiting Brick Township.

Sophomore goalie Kelsea Kenniff made five saves to help the Cougars advance to play at Toms River South on Tuesday.

Girls' Soccer

Goals from Clare MacAdam and Erica Wallace in the final two minutes gave Holy Cross an improbable 4-3 win at Bordentown in a Burlington County League game and clinched its first Patriot Division title in two years.

With the Lancers unable to stop Alexis McTammey, who recorded a hat trick for Bordentown, and trailing by 3-2, their division title hopes seemed bleak.

MacAdam evened the game late on a strike from 25 yards that was misplayed by the goalkeeper. MacAdam had assisted on the Lancers' second goal.

With 35 seconds left, Wallace beat a defender in the penalty area and drilled the ball to the left corner of the net from 6 yards for the winner.

Holy Cross coach Tom Guida was proud of his team's effort: "To come back to tie it, and to win with so little time left . . . they were not to be denied today."

Elsewhere in the league:

Palmyra edged visiting Medford Tech, 5-3, in a game highlighted by an offensive rush in the second half.
