Surfers love hurricanes, unless they come too close to shore. And with the storm named Sandy headed in our direction, the National Scholastic Surfing Association Northeast Conference has postponed its championship meet, to have been held Sunday in Seaside Heights.
Larry Schmidt, conference director, said plans now are to hold the event on Nov. 4, the quality of waves and weather permitting. The event will be staged on the Sampson Avenue beach.
Surfing teams from 10 New Jersey high schools and one from Long Island, N.Y., are signed up for the competition, he said.
