Marvin I. Block, 79, Philadelphia commercial lawyer

Marvin I. Block, 79, a Philadelphia commercial lawyer who specialized in real estate and condominium law, died Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Block, who lived in the Northeast Philadelphia for 48 years, died from complications of lung disease, said his son, Gary Block.

Mr. Block was a member of the Zarwin Baum law firm for nine years. He represented numerous condominium associations and also developed condominiums in South Jersey.

He served as an assistant attorney general and special assistant attorney general for Pennsylvania's professional licensing boards. He also served as a staff attorney for the Pennsylvania Board of Claims in Harrisburg.

Before he joined Zarwin Baum, he was a senior partner at a small local law firm for more than 25 years where he handled commercial, real estate, and estate matters.

Mr. Block's son said that his father was an avid fan of the Phillies and the Flyers. He was a season-ticket holder with the hockey team for every year since its first season, in 1967-68.

Born in Atlantic City, Mr. Block received his bachelor's degree and his law degree from Temple University.

He was a former president of Temple Zion synagogue and former president of the Men's Club Temple Beth Torah in Philadelphia.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Naomi; his son; daughters Toby Grosswald, Cheryl Friedenberg, and Deena Padnis; and eight grandchildren.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Goldstein's Rosenberg's Raphael Sacks Suburban North, 310 Second Street Pike in Southampton.
