Sat. S.J. boys' and girls' roundup: Cinnaminson gets past Sterling

Kevin Sotell scored in double overtime Saturday to lift Cinnaminson over Sterling, 2-1, in the first round of the South Jersey Group 2 boys' soccer tournament.

Sotell's goal came with two minutes remaining in the second overtime. Steve Kalbach received a throw-in and passed to Sotell, who beat Sterling goalkeeper Matt Callan.

Sotell also scored Cinnaminson's goal in regulation.

Cinnaminson's Luke Garvey had four saves, and Callan stopped nine shots.

Also in South Jersey Group 2, Andrew Kratz stopped all six shots he faced as Deptford defeated Collingswood, 2-0. Jose Gonzalez and Ousmane Sall scored for the Spartans. Jack Grassi made five saves for Collingswood.

S.J. Group 4. Danny Hampton scored in the second overtime to give Cherokee a 2-1 victory over Toms River East.

Hampton scored seven minutes into double overtime on a centering pass from Robert Gillin. Hampton, a sophomore, had tied the score with 20 minutes remaining in the second half on a free kick.

S.J. Group 3. Trevor Tierno kept the Timber Creek net empty as the Chargers downed Westampton Tech, 4-0. Gian Duclos, Trevor Hatton, Vincent Palmucci, and Matt Wolf scored for Timber Creek. Alex Kourahanis had three assists.

Central Jersey Group 1. Three players scored for Burlington City in a 3-1, first-round victory over Perth Amboy Tech.

Perth Amboy broke out to an early lead. But in the 18th minute, Ali Cakir scored on a header off a corner kick from Ahmet Kaya. Kaya scored four minutes later on an assist from Faruk Ozdemir. Ozdemir capped the scoring in the 48th minute.

Girls' Soccer

Jenny Mosley scored twice as Timber Creek rode three first-half goals to a 3-1 victory over Delsea in the first round of the South Jersey Group 3 tournament.

Hayley DeFeo scored the other goal for the Chargers.

Goalkeeper Jenna Tolen stopped 11 shots for Timber Creek. Jane Grimley scored for Delsea in the second half.

S.J. Group 2. Lauren Vranich scored with 10 minutes remaining as Cinnaminson inched past Sterling, 1-0.

Vranich scored on a penalty kick after teammate Janae Dockins was taken out by a Sterling player in the box.

Jamie Campbell stopped seven shots for Cinnaminson. Maria Cice made 13 saves for Sterling.

Field Hockey

Ali LaMaina registered a hat trick as Haddonfield scored four times in each half to blow past Deptford, 8-1, in the first round of the South Jersey Group 2 tournament.

Tenaya Clark added two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs.

Julia Bennett, Ana Buzzerd, and Morgan Sehdev rounded out the scoring for Haddonfield. Bennett and Buzzerd also tallied assists.

Deptford forced just two shots on net in the game.

Nonleague. Jill Vandermark scored for Lower Cape May in a 2-1 loss to Barnegat.
