Long-term cellphone

Posted: October 28, 2012

The SpareOne mobile phone is not for everyday chatting, and there's no e-mail or Web browsing. This phone is meant for emergencies - now, or up to 15 years hence. That's how long the included single AA battery (an ultra-long-

lasting Energizer Ultimate Lithium L91) is estimated to stay charged if stored unused. Once turned on, you get about 10 hours of talk time. The battery is replaceable. The phone looks pretty much like a basic cellphone (though a bit longer, at 5.5-by-2 inches, but slim and featherweight), with push-button numbers and function keys. It also has a built-in flashlight. There's no display to see what number you're dialing. You will need a GSM SIM card (not included) preloaded with minutes for domestic or international calls to dial anything other than 911. The SpareOne comes in a sturdy, transparent, resealable waterproof pouch to protect it, even in use.

SpareOne is $119.99 at www.spareone.com; 866-972-5769.
