DN Editorial: Sandy: Just weather ... or a plot to rule the world?

IT IS A SAD TRUTH of the 21st century that no event in the universe can happen without immediate conspiracy theories' being created to explain them. Hurricane Sandy is no exception.

We were speculating about what theories might be offered for this storm, which landed so eerily close to the presidential election. For example, would Democrats claim that superstorm Sandy was caused by Republicans who, thwarted by the successful pause of Pennsylvlania's voter-ID law, created the storm to blow out power in the key East Coast states, thereby discouraging the vote and ensuring a win for Romney?

Or would Republicans insist that Sandy was caused by Democrats who wanted to remind Republicans and tea partiers that, in fact, we do need Big Government, at least when it comes to FEMA funds?

Of course, truth - and truthers - are stranger than fiction. At least one website is claiming that Obama himself engineered the storm to make sure that he got re-elected. The claim is that Obama conspired with a research program run by the Air Force and Navy, which is able to manipulate the weather with electromagnetic waves. Apparently, the chaos from the storm will allow Obama to appear as a strong leader.

Hell, if he could create a storm like Sandy, all the more reason he deserves to be re-elected.
