Sandy's stranding room only vignettes

SANDY REARED her ugly dread in the sports world. Some examples:

* The St. Cloud State women's hockey team was still stranded in Providence, R.I. on Tuesday, thanks to Hurricane Sandy. The Huskies were supposed to catch a flight out of Boston on Monday after playing a weekend series against Providence College. And now they're hoping to catch a flight by Thursday so they can back to Minnesota for their home opener on Friday against Ohio State.

* With the storm bearing down and his flight canceled, Cincinnati Bengals long snapper Clark Harris had to improvise. He got his wife and their 4-month-old child in a car and headed west, driving 12 1/2 hours through wind and heavy rain to get back to Cincinnati. He pulled into town in the early morning hours Monday, wondering if his beachfront house back in New Jersey was still standing.

"My house is presently in the process of being demolished, probably, by this hurricane," Harris, the Rutgers grad and Manahawkin, N.J. native, said Monday afternoon. "I'm right on the shore, 30 minutes north of Atlantic City, right on the bay. I got water in my backyard and everything. It is probably going to be in my house by, probably, about now."

"Well, nothing you can do about it. I can't stop a hurricane from coming. So, whatever happens, happens. I got flood insurance for a reason."

* New York City Marathon organizers say they are moving ahead with plans for Sunday's race even as the city staggers through the aftermath of superstorm Sandy. New York Road Runners said in a statement Tuesday that "the marathon has always been a special day for New Yorkers as a symbol of the vitality and resiliency of this city." There's still the possibility of changes to the race because of the storm.

* In response to the storm, Indiana State University is giving fans several opportunities to make donations in the days leading up to their football game against Illinois State on Saturday. Terre Haute Catholic Charities will give a free ticket to each fan that donates at least 5 pounds of items. Donors to the American Red Cross will also get a free ticket to the game.

* Looking ahead on the sports calendar to August, Oak Hill Country Club, the site of 2013 PGA championship in upstate New York, lost several trees in the storm. But still standing is the famed Leaning Oak - supported by a steel beam since 1956 - on the right side of the 12th hole.
