Donnelly's Picks

Former Inquirer staff handicapper Craig Donnelly makes some wagers on Saturday's Breeders' Cup card at Santa Anita in California:

Saturday

Filly & Mare Sprint

Groupie Doll appears in peak form; loves this distance, showing terrific closing kick; and fires at numerous venues; short price to win but use in gimmicks. Dust And Diamonds impressed last summer at Delaware and improving with each start; competed well over local course earlier when not the horse she is now. Turbulent Descent failed to give true measure as Belmont favorite but excels at this yardage and captured Santa Anita Oaks last season.

Wager: Groupie Doll $20 exactas over Dust and Diamonds and Turbulent Descent ($40).

Juvenile

Power Broker spread out field when crushing opposition over track for talent-filled Baffert barn; overcomes tricky post by stalking speed outside. Shanghai Bobby, a son of Pennsylvania Derby winner Harlan's Holiday, has been perfect in four starts in New York for Pletcher stable and obvious threat. Dynamic Sky advanced through traffic in Grade I at Keeneland when trying two turns for first time.

Wager: Power Broker, Shanghai Bobby, and Dynamic Sky $10 exacta box ($60).

Mile

Excelebration dominated in top event at Ascot and only horse to defeat him in recent years is the unbeaten Frankel, among the great horses of all time; earned over $2 million competing at this distance. Wise Dan captured his last three starts this distance by wide margins and boasts 12-for-19 career mark; raced primarily in Kentucky but has also won in New York and Canada. Animal Kingdom, last year's 20-1 Kentucky Derby victor, has raced only once since June of last season due to injury, but showed turf prowess in Florida; could offer explosive late rally.

Wager: Excelebration $20 exactas over Wise Dan and Animal Kingdom ($40).
