Kevin J. McCarthy, 56, a retired Army sergeant who was born and raised in Havertown, died of cancer Monday, Aug. 27, in Lake Charles, La.

A longtime resident of the community, Mr. McCarthy attended Havertown High School. He joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1975, serving until 1985. He served in the Army from 1985 to 2005, retiring after 20 years of active duty.

Mr. McCarthy was deployed to Bosnia and Iraq. His duty stations included Germany; Fort Rucker, Ala.; Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; Fort Lewis, W.Va.; and Fort Polk, La.

He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and vegetable gardening.

Mr. McCarthy is survived by his wife of 18 years, Marsha; brothers, Michael and Denis; and sisters, Maureen Long and Kathleen Griffith.

Interment is set for 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery. Those attending are to arrive at the Administration Building by 9 a.m.
