Baseball Notes: Mets, Jason Bay part ways

Posted: November 08, 2012

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - Jason Bay and the New York Mets ended their unproductive relationship after three miserable seasons when they agreed Wednesday to terminate the outfielder's contract with one guaranteed season remaining.

The deal makes the 34-year-old a free agent and allows the team to spread out the remaining $21 million it owes him.

After signing a $66 million, four-year deal before the 2010 season, the three-time all-star hit .234 in three injury-plagued seasons with 26 home runs and 124 RBIs, including a .165 average with eight homers and 20 RBIs this year. Sidelined by concussions and rib injuries, he played just 288 games for the Mets.

Grandal gets drug ban

San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal has been suspended 50 games because of a positive test for testosterone. The commissioner's office announced the drug penalty Wednesday.

Dodgers hire McGwire

Mark McGwire was hired as hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He will work with all-star sluggers Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier.

Nieves joins Boston

The Boston Red Sox hired Juan Nieves to join John Farrell's staff as pitching coach. Nieves, 47, spent 14 seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization, the last five as bullpen coach.

Young pleads guilty

Detroit Tigers star Delmon Young pleaded guilty to aggravated harassment for shouting an anti-Semitic slur and tackling a man to the ground outside a New York City hotel April 27.

The 27-year-old outfielder was ordered to complete 10 days of community service and enroll in a program that teaches tolerance. If Young completes the program successfully, he'll be able to withdraw his plea and plead guilty to a lesser charge.

Ex-Yank prospect sentenced

Former New York Yankees pitching prospect Brien Taylor has been sentenced to 38 months in prison after pleading guilty in August to distributing crack cocaine. Taylor, 40, was arrested in March.

Taylor was the No. 1 overall selection in the 1991 draft, but he never threw a pitch in the major leagues.
