Marion B.W. Holmes, 86, former executive director of vocational and career education at the Philadelphia School District, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Joseph C. Scott Medical Center in Abington after battling Parkinson's disease for more than a decade.

Mrs. Holmes graduated from Abington High School in 1944 and received a bachelor's degree in business education from Temple University in 1948. She earned a master's degree in vocational education from Temple and later a doctorate at Rutgers.

She began her career as a teacher at Overbrook High School. Mrs. Holmes then became the supervisor of vocational education for the Philadelphia School District and later was appointed the executive director of career and vocational education. Her son, J. Curtis Warner Jr., said growing up in a household with a career educator was tough because of how much his mother wanted him to succeed.

Mrs. Holmes and her husband Philip Jr. founded the Holmes and Holmes Scholarship, which serves minority students pursuing vocational careers.

Mrs. Holmes was first married to James Curtis Warner Sr. She married Philip Holmes after his death. Both are now deceased.

Besides her son, she is survived by stepchildren Philip Holmes 3d and Sherrill Brown; a sister; a brother; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, with services following, at the First Baptist Church of Crestmont, 1678 Fairview Ave., Willow Grove.
