Three Super Fresh stores in South Jersey to close

The final three Super Fresh stores in the South Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia are being shut down by corporate parent Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., according to the union representing 155 clerks who will lose their jobs.

Supermarkets in Marlton, Westmont and Plainsboro will be shuttered in about two months, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1360 President Sam Ferraino said Wednesday.

The Montvale, N.J.-based company notified the union of its plans late last week and told employees a few days ago, Ferraino said. A&P said it would close the "underperforming" stores Jan. 11.

"While this is a very difficult circumstance for our associates, customers, partners and the local communities, we remain focused on providing great value and service to our customers that shop in these stores," A&P spokeswoman Marcy Connor said in an e-mail.

Ferraino said the company had initially planned to close only Marlton, but later concluded that costs associated with keeping the other two stores open were too high, given that some 90 percent of employees would need to take buyouts for a restructuring to work.    - Maria Panaritis
