West Chester takes soccer title

West Chester got a goal from Jen Hutchinson (Neshaminy) on a header with four minutes left, and the host Golden Rams made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Slippery Rock, capturing the Atlantic Region title of the NCAA Division II women's soccer tournament Friday.

West Chester (15-4-1) advanced to the quarterfinals to play the College of St. Rose, 1-0 winners over Dowling, on Sunday at noon.

Women's volleyball. Temple topped Duquesne, 3-2, in the Atlantic Ten quarterfinals in Pittsburgh.

Chelsea Tupuola had 33 digs, Gabriella Matautia had 17 kills and 13 digs, and Elyse Burkert had 19 kills for the Owls (19-10).

Temple advanced to meet Dayton in the semis at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Signings. Penn State announced that men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers had received a letter of intent from Germantown Academy forward Julian Moore of Fort Washington.

"He's a high-energy guy," Chambers said of the 6-foot-10, 215-pound Moore. "[He's] rim-to-rim one of the fastest big men we've seen in the last two years."

The Nittany Lions also got letters from 6-3 guard Geno Thorpe of Pittsburgh; 6-0 guard Graham Woodward of Edina, Minn.; and 6-6 forward Payton Banks of Orange, Calif.
