Polly Hanson, a former Metro transit police chief in Washington, was named Monday as the new Amtrak chief of police.

Hanson, 57, replaces John J. O'Connor, who retired in June.

A graduate of Temple University, with an MBA in applied behavioral science from Johns Hopkins University, she most recently was director of law enforcement and security at the U.S. Department of Interior.

Previously, Hanson spent 27 years with Metro transit police in Washington, rising through the ranks to become chief. And she spent three years as an executive with Washington's metropolitan police department.
