POLICE IN Puerto Rico said former boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho Sr. had been shot and critically wounded Tuesday night in Bayamon, near San Juan.

The Associated Press reported that doctors and Camacho's spokesman said the former boxer was expected to survive.

Police said Camacho was shot in neck and face while in a car outside a bar. A second man in the car also was shot and killed but authorities said it is not clear what relationship, if any, Camacho had with the victim. The motive was unknown.

Police said the 50-year-old Camacho was unconscious as he was taken to the trauma center at Centro Medico in San Juan where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Dr. Ernesto Torres, the hospital director, told reporters the bullet apparently struck Camacho in the jaw but exited his head, then lodged in his right shoulder and fractured two vertebrae. The doctor said Camacho was at risk of paralysis from the shooting.

Camacho won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s. He retired in May of 2010 with a record of 79-6-3 with 38 KOs in a career that spanned 28 years.

According to the newspaper Primera Hora, police captain Reinaldo Santiago, of Bayamon, said Camacho and the driver were riding in a Ford Mustang when a gray bus pulled up and one of its occupants got out of the vehicle and shot the men multiple times.
