Erica Wheeler scored 14 points and Betnijah Laney added 12 as Rutgers (2-1) built a 17-point first-half lead and beat host Temple, 60-44, at McGonigle Hall.

Tyonna Williams led the Owls (3-2) with a game-high 15 points. Rateska Brown chipped in with 12.

Rutgers held a 31-14 halftime lead. Temple's 36-35 second-half edge wasn't enough.

Maryland 94, American U. 54 - Tianna Hawkins had 25 points and nine rebounds as the 10th-ranked Terrapins (3-1) easily handled the Eagles (0-3) in College Park, Md.

St. John's 71, Iona 55 - Shenneika Smith scored 21 points to help the 18th-ranked Red Storm (3-1) beat the Gaels (2-3) in New York.

Rutgers coup. One of the nation's top players has signed a national letter of intent to play for Rutgers. Scarlet Knights coach C. Vivian Stringer announced that Tyler Scaife, the 2012 Gatorade Arkansas girls' basketball player of the year, would be joining her team.

A 5-foot-9 guard, Scaife is ranked as the top point guard in the nation and is the ninth-rated recruit overall by ESPNU HoopGurlz. She averaged 25.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 3.7 steals.

With Elena Delle Donne back in the lineup, Delaware got back into a winning groove.

Delle Donne scored 22 points in her first game of the season Tuesday night to lead Delaware (2-2) to a 64-46 win over Providence in Dover, Del.

The preseason all-American missed the first three games while dealing with symptoms of Lyme disease.

"I felt OK. My endurance isn't there, but it's something I can't push, either," Delle Donne said. "I'm just working to get back. I don't want to push it too hard and send myself back to the bed."
