La Salle tops Villanova in overtime

Posted: November 26, 2012

The last time La Salle beat Villanova was so long ago that Jay Wright was just months into the job on the Main Line and John Giannini was still at Maine. Wright's first Villanova team lost to La Salle in November 2001, but not since, 10 straight wins, a few blowouts, a few games that could have gone either way but always went the Villanova way.

La Salle seemed to have Sunday afternoon's game at Gola Arena under control midway through the first half. Then, the Wildcats commenced a 19-point turnaround overlapping the halves and looked like they had control. La Salle missed 16 of 17 shots during that endless stretch.

Finally, it became a possession by possession game where no lead was substantial or safe and 40 minutes were not going to be enough. La Salle point guard Tyreek Duren hit a long three with six seconds left in regulation to get La Salle even and La Salle, playing from behind the entire overtime session, caught up again, went ahead with 18.2 seconds left on a perfect backdoor from D.J. Peterson to Duren and won it, 77-74.

The streak was over.

Mouph Yarou had 20 points and Jay Pinkston 19 for Villanova. Ramon Galloway had 26 points for La Salle while Duren had 23.
