Sheldon Witherspoon Age: "60-plus" Where he's from: North Philadelphia near Temple University. "I graduated from high school, went to college, came back home and couldn't find a job," he said, "but they offered me a job in Alabama - by way of the Air Force, so I did it." Witherspoon lived in Alabama for 40 years and retired from the Department of Youth Services after 25 years as a counselor for juvenile delinquents. He returned to Philly in 2008 to be closer to his family after his wife's death. What people misunderstand about Philly: "That this is the 'City of Brotherly Love,' " he said. "The robberies, the shootings, the killings . . . brotherly love just doesn't fit in anymore. It did when I was younger, of course, but not now." What he misses about the Philadelphia from his teens: "The old doo-wop singers, the harmony, the music," he said, adding that he "used to miss the nightlife" in Philadelphia while living in Alabama. - Sara Khan
