Haddonfield's Malloy tabbed as S.J. girls' runner of year

Meghan Malloy says that sometimes a cross-country race will end and she won't be sure how well she has run.

"Sometimes, it just seems to go by so fast," Malloy said.

Malloy finally got a chance to step back and appreciate her accomplishments at the end of her senior season. She had to concede that she enjoyed the view.

Malloy, the Haddonfield senior who led the Bulldogs to a sectional title, was named South Jersey's cross-country Runner of the Year by the South Jersey Track Coaches Association.

"It was definitely a goal of mine," said Malloy, who was honored at the club's annual banquet Wednesday night. "I knew there were some really good runners, really good athletes that I had to compete against."

Malloy won the South Jersey Group 2 championship Nov. 10 at Delsea with a time of 18 minutes, 45.03 seconds for the 3.1 miles. Her first-place finish led Haddonfield to the team title.

"That was a big goal of ours," Malloy said.

Malloy took fourth place in the state Group 2 meet with a time of 19:13, then was South Jersey's best finisher at the Meet of Champions with a time of 19:05 on the famous course at Holmdel.

Malloy said she has not made a college choice. She plans to run at the collegiate level.

"It was a great year," Malloy said. "You always think you can run a little better, a little faster. But I'm happy with what I was able to accomplish."
