College Basketball: Buckeyes get a scare before big showdown

Posted: December 19, 2012

Deshaun Thomas scored 21 points to lead No. 7 Ohio State past Winthrop, 65-55, on Tuesday night in Columbus, Ohio. It was the last tune-up for the Buckeyes (9-1) before Saturday's rematch with No. 9 Kansas. The Jayhawks beat them twice last year, including in the Final Four. Whether Ohio State was looking past Winthrop (4-5) or whether the Eagles just played well, the game was in doubt until Thomas got hot.

Kansas 87, Richmond 59 - Jeff Withey had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and the Jayhawks (9-1) used a big first-half run to help put away the visiting Spiders. Kansas will ride an eight-game win streak into Saturday's showdown at Ohio State.

Elsewhere: West Chester's Jon Breeden nailed a pair of free throws with two seconds left as the Golden Rams (5-3, 3-1 PSAC) held on for a 56-53 win over host Slippery Rock (5-2, 3-1). . . . Gwynedd-Mercy fell to Scranton, 79-64, in the consolation game of the PNC Bank Royal Rumble against host Scranton. . . . Stockton (9-1) outscored visiting Neumann (3-6) by 17 points in the second half and came away with a 69-58 victory.
