Eagles Notes: Fryar to coach N.J. high school

Former Eagles wide receiver Irving Fryar is likely to be named football coach at Robbinsville High School in Mercer County, the Times of Trenton reported.

When Fryar takes over the team, he is likely to hire some former Eagles to his staff.

Three sources familiar with the interview process who asked for anonymity told the Times that the hiring of Fryar, 50, was all but finished. The sources indicated that Fryar, a 17-year NFL veteran, is likely to be named the replacement for coach Jason Gray at the Jan. 22 school board meeting.

Robbinsville athletic director Curtis Wyers declined comment about Fryar on Friday. However, a source close to the program told the Times: "I'm 99 percent sure it's Fryar. And his staff is supposed to be a who's who of ex-NFL players."

Among Fryar's potential assistants is former Eagles defensive tackle Hollis Thomas. Two other former Eagles, tackle Tra Thomas and linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, are said to be interested as well.

"We want guys like Irving Fryar to coach our kids," former Eagle and Trenton native Troy Vincent told the Times. Vincent played with Fryar for seven NFL seasons. "It's perfect. You're talking about a man going from an active participant to an active contributor. That's the ultimate in giving back."

Fryar, 50, played at Rancocas Valley High and Nebraska. The New England Patriots made him the top overall pick in the 1984 draft.

A five-time Pro Bowler, he finished his career with 851 receptions for 12,785 yards and 84 touchdowns.
