Philadelphia has a violent start to 2013

Philadelphians rang in 2013 with a violent start.

On New Year's Day, police were investigating three homicides and one fatal hit-and-run car crash.

The city has seen an increase in homicides for three straight years. In 2012, there were 337 murders, up from 324 in 2011.

At 12:31 a.m., police from the 18th District found a male, 16, lying near 5600 Carpenter St. in the city's Cobbs Creek section. He had been shot once in the chest and in the hand. The unidentified teen was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead 19 minutes later, according to police.

The second homicide of the year occurred at 2:36 a.m. inside a private home in the 1600 block of Pratt Street in the city's East Frankford section. Police in the 19th District responded and found an unidentified man, 24, shot once in the head, according to police.

An unidentified man was crossing City Avenue at Presidential Boulevard when he was struck and killed by a silver-color car. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:47 a.m. The car, which was traveling west on City Avenue, was last seen getting on the eastbound ramp to the Schuylkill Expressway, according to police.

At 3:40 a.m., police were called to the city's Tioga section for a man with a gun in the 1700 block of Venango Street.

They found three unidentified gunshot victims inside a residence. A man, 23, with a gunshot wound to the chest was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died at 4:04 a.m., police said.

A man, 22, with two gunshot wounds to the chest and one to the left foot was taken to Temple in critical condition. A third man, also 22, was taken to Einstein Medical Center with gunshot wounds to his foot. He was listed in stable condition.

In all cases, police were still investigating, and no arrests had been made.
