Smith breaks Archibishop Wood scoring mark

Posted: January 02, 2013

SOME INDIVIDUAL scoring records last what seems like forever. At Archbishop Wood High, there have been three changes in a little more than two calendar years.

The latest occurred Saturday at St. Augustine Prep in Richland, N.J., as Pat Smith, a junior wing guard, posted 42 points to lead Wood past Sacred Heart, of Vineland, N.J., in a basketball showcase event featuring Philly-area Catholic schools against those from South Jersey.

Smith shot 14-for-25 from the floor (8-for-17 on treys) and 6-for-6 at the line as the Vikings triumphed, 78-46.

Guard Joe Getz, now playing at UMBC, twice broke Wood's record in the 2010-11 season. He tallied 40 in the opener vs. West Chester Henderson, breaking a mark that had stood since 1992 (38 by Sean Brennan), then notched 41 on Jan. 9 against West Catholic.

Getz' last point in that one came on a free throw with 1:03 remaining and raised his career total to exactly 1,000.
