Guilty plea in Old City beating death of Temple grad

Posted: January 04, 2013

Felix Carrillo, one of the three men arrested last January for the beating death of a recent Temple University graduate in Old City, pleaded guilty Friday morning.

Carrillo, 24, admitted his guilt in the Jan. 14 beating death of Kevin Kless before Common Pleas Judge Benjamin Lerner, and was sentenced to 2 to five years in state prison.

Carrillo's attorney, Scott Sigman, said his client plead guilty to invountary manslaughter as part of a negotiated guilty plea.

Carrillo and his co-defendants, cousin Kenneth Santiago, 20, and Steven Ferguson, 21, were charged with third-degree murder following a preliminary hearing last May.

Santiago, of Juniata Park, and Ferguson, of Fox Chase, are still awaiting trial on that charge, which carries a maximum 20- to 40-year state prison sentence.

Carrillo, of Olney, did not land the fatal blow during the fight with Kless, 23, attorney Sigman said.

Kless, with his girlfriend and another woman, was jumped about 2:30 a.m. at Fourth and Chestnut Streets in Old City while trying to hail a taxi.

Police believe the three defendants mistakenly thought Kless had yelled at their passing car. They exited their car and a fight erupted.

Kless was beaten unconscious and dead shortly afterward.
