S.J. trio aids all-star win

Posted: January 06, 2013

Three local players helped the East team knock off the West team, 15-8, in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.

Eastern defensive back Eli Apple and Timber Creek lineman Greg Webb were part of the East defense, which held the West scoreless for the first three quarters.

The North Carolina-bound Webb finished with one tackle.

Mainland's Jim Cooper was the team's starting kicker and coverted the East's extra point in the first quarter. He later had 21- and 37-yard field goal attempts blocked.

Cooper is headed to Temple and Apple is committed to Ohio State.

Apple is ranked by ESPN as the state's top cornerback and No. 3 in the nation. He changed his surname in December from Woodward to Apple in order to honor his stepfather, Timothy Apple.

Louisville-bound wideout James Quick was named the game's MVP.
