Phila. officer charged with assaulting his wife

A Philadelphia police officer was arrested Tuesday on charges that he assaulted his wife while off duty last week, the department said.

James Timms, 41, allegedly had an altercation with his wife Jan. 2 in the 100 block of Manheim Street in the city's Germantown section. He was charged with aggravated assault and related offenses.

Timms, a 16-year veteran of the force who was assigned to the 35th Police District, was suspended for 30 days with the intent to dismiss by Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey.    - Robert Moran
