Zulli heads Region 1 football first team

Shippensburg quarterback Zach Zulli (Perkiomen Valley), the offensive player of the year, and defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton), were named Tuesday to the first-team Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II Super Region 1 squad. Both are juniors.

Senior linebacker Cody Fleming (Upper Perkiomen) and junior cornerback Avery Coleman (Penncrest) were second-team selections for Shippensburg, and senior defensive lineman Mark Kahlil Smith (Lower Merion) earned a place on the third team.

Also named to the first team were West Chester junior running back Rondell White (West Chester Rustin) and sophomore linebacker Ronell Williams (Chester).

The first- and second-team selections advance to the national ballot from which the all-American team will be named.

Kutztown senior quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) and sophomore cornerback English Peay (George Washington) were named to the third team.

Wrestling standouts. With two critical pins that led Lycoming to its 11th undefeated run in the Pa./N.Y. Duals, 184-pounder Tyler Cunningham, a senior from Haddon Township, earned his first career Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference wrestler-of-the-week award.

Delaware Valley senior Emmanuel Ajagbe moved up three spots to become the top-ranked 149-pound wrestler in Division III.

Aggies sophomore Aaron Karns is fourth at 197.

Soccer scholar. Leah Braidi (Sacred Heart) of Vineland, a junior midfielder for the Richard Stockton women, was named to the Scholar All-East Region third team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Ice hockey. Visiting Salve Regina snapped the Neumann women's two-game win streak with a 3-2 nonconference victory Tuesday. Neumann is 4-5-1.
