Fla. man to be tried in alleged Villanova kidnap attempt

Posted: January 10, 2013

The case of a Florida man accused of trying to kidnap a Villanova homeowner has been bound over for trial, officials said Wednesday.

John Felder, 76, waived his preliminary hearing as part of a deal with Delaware County prosecutors in exchange for dropping one of the charges against him, attempted aggravated assault.

He still faces charges of felony attempted kidnapping, simple assault, and attempted unlawful restraint. He is scheduled to appear Feb. 6 in Delaware County Court for arraignment.

Felder was arrested in November after, police say, he approached a Villanova house posing as a flower deliveryman and then used a Taser on the 50-year-old homeowner, who opened the door. The homeowner closed the door and Felder fled, police said; he was arrested three days later in the Poconos after police traced him through a parking ticket he received while buying flowers for his alleged ruse.

A Temple University graduate and former chief financial officer of Spencer Gifts, Felder has been out on bail since December, although a judge initially declined to release him after hearing that he had carefully planned the alleged kidnapping and may have been planning more.

Art Donato, a lawyer for Felder's alleged victim, said the homeowner had increased security at his property since the encounter.
