THE STAR of the Alabama-Notre Dame national title game wasn't wearing a helmet or shoulder pads.

She was sitting in the stands cheering for her boyfriend, AJ McCarron, who quarterbacked the Crimson Tide to a 42-14 win over the Irish.

When ESPN showed Katherine Webb - aka Miss Alabama USA 2012 - sitting next to McCarron's mom during the first quarter it created a tsunami-like wave of reaction.

According to reports, the number of Webb's Twitter followers jumped from about 2,200 to over 160,000. As of Tuesday night, McCarron only had a little more than 116,000.

Among her new followers were Miami Heat forward LeBron James and Arizona Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett.

Dockett even tweeted his telephone number to the 23-year-old Webb and suggested they get together after the game.

On Tuesday, Dockett said he meant to send a direct tweet to Webb that only she could read.

Too late, McCarron had seen it and sent off his own tweet to Dockett: "betterkeepdreaming like the rest of these dudes."

McCarron said he was stunned when told the stir his girlfriend - an Auburn grad - caused.

"No way," he said to Outkickthecoverage.com's Clay Travis. "Say you swear."

Venerable broadcaster Brent Musberger even found it difficult to control himself.

With the camera on Webb, the smitten 73-year-old Musberger was moved to say, " . . . What a beautiful woman. Wow!"

On Tuesday, ESPN released a statement, apologizing for Musberger's reaction.

"We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that."

Webb said she took Musberger's comments as a compliment.

"It was kind of nice," she said. "I didn't look at it as creepy at all. For a woman to be called beautiful, I don't see how that's an issue."
