Police: woman went to NYC, left 6-year-old home alone

A Delaware county woman is facing charges after she allegedly left her child alone to travel to New York City for the day.

Upper Darby police were called by neighbors at 4:16 p.m. on Jan. 4 to check on a child. They found the six-year-old living in deplorable conditions inside the dirty apartment. A mattress and electrical heating element were on the living room floor, according to court papers.

Shawn Kersey, 35, of Kent Road in Upper Darby, was reached by police. She told them she was on a bus and would not be home for another hour and a half.

When interviewed by police, the child told them her mother went "to a store far away." She has been left alone four times and her mother told her to hide in a closet if someone knocks on the door, according to court documents.

That day Kersey woke her child, dressed her for school and told her to either watch television or go back to sleep and she would call to let her know what time she should go to school.

"Who walked you to the bus today?" investigators asked the child, according to court documents.

"I walked myself," she told them.

Kersey was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. She was released on bail and had a court appearance scheduled Jan 14 before Judge Harry Karapalides.
