NJSIAA executive director Steve Timko says that state officials have declined an offer to move the state wrestling championships back to their originally scheduled dates at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
That's because a Lady Gaga concert, which was to occupy the arena on the weekend of March 1, is not going to happen.
Timko said the NJSIAA was notified by Boardwalk Hall officials that the arena was available for March 1-3, the original dates for the state championships.
But since the organization had changed the wrestling schedule in September - moving the start of the team, district, and regional championships, and setting the state finals for March 8-10 - Timko said the decision was made not to make another change for this year.
"It would have been too much of a disruption," Timko said Wednesday during the NJSIAA's executive committee meeting in Robbinsville.
Timko said the state championships would move back to the first weekend in March in both 2014 and 2015, the latter two years of a new three-year contract with Boardwalk Hall.
Tickets for the state championships went on sale Jan. 4. Timko said Wednesday that 2,500 tickets for the event already had been sold.
"That's ahead of last year," Timko said.
