Phillies sign Rodrigo Lopez

Posted: January 13, 2013

The Phillies signed righthander Rodrigo Lopez to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training.

This will be the second stint with the Phillies for Lopez, 37, who made seven appearances for them in 2009. He pitched in only four major-league games last season, all with the Cubs, and figures to pitch at triple-A Lehigh Valley as insurance.

Lopez can earn $1 million if he makes the Phillies, according to CSNPhilly.com.

Meanwhile, three Phillies will represent Canada at this spring's World Baseball Classic. Righthander Phillippe Aumont, outfielder Tyson Gillies, and infielder Pete Orr were named to Canada's provisional roster Saturday. All three will leave camp to participate.

The United States will announce its roster later this week.
