Temple hires veteran Phil Snow as defensive coordinator

College coaching veteran Phil Snow will become Temple's new defensive coordinator, sources confirmed Monday.

The California native spent the last three seasons as Eastern Michigan's defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Snow, 57, replaces Chuck Heater, who left to become the defensive coordinator at Marshall. Heater reportedly was not offered the coordinator's job with the Owls after head coach Matt Rhule was hired last month.

Snow comes to Temple with 17 years of coaching experience, including stops in the NFL and the Pac-10.

He was the Detroit Lions defensive backs coach from 2005-09 before heading to Eastern Michigan in 2010.

Snow served as defensive coordinator at Laney College (1980-81), Boise State (1982-86), Arizona State (1992-2000), UCLA (2001-02), and Washington (2003-04). He was the defensive backs coach at California from 1987-91.

Rhule worked under Snow as the assistant defensive line coach at UCLA in 2001.

The Owls are still searching for an offensive coordinator. Two weeks after accepting the position, Nick Rolovich said last week he was staying at Nevada.

OwlScoop.com reported that Rhule is considering Temple offensive assistant Marcus Satterfield and former North Carolina offensive coordinator John Shoop for the job.
