Former schools finance boss headed to Manhattan

Posted: January 16, 2013

MICHAEL MASCH, the former chief financial officer for the Philadelphia School District, was named Monday as vice president for finance and chief finanical officer at Manhattan College.

His shaky four-year tenure with the district basically ended last January, when Masch was stripped of his CFO title by the School Reform Commission. The SRC put former PGW executive Thomas Knudsen in charge of district finances, naming him chief recovery officer. Masch left the district four months later.

His relationship with former schools Superintendent Arlene Ackerman was often nonexistent.

Masch "brings to Manhattan College a wealth of experience, an outstanding record of accomplishment, and a strong desire to contribute to our mission," said the school's president, Brennan O'Donnell.

Before he worked for the district, Masch was Pennsylvania's budget secretary from 2003 until 2008. He previously worked at the University of Pennsylvania as vice president for budget and management for six years, and worked in Mayor Ed Rendell's administration.

Manhattan College is a private Catholic institution in the Bronx founded in the Lasallian tradition.
